Robert C. Smith passed away at
the age of 84, leaving behind him a distinguished legacy of community service and the formation of a charitable foundation which will continue to give for years to come.

PROFILE OF FOUNDER ROBERT C. SMITH

Born in 1923, Robert resided on Elm Street, Norwich, in the family home purchased in 1908. He attended Saint Paul’s Catholic School and graduated in 1941 from Norwich High School. Entering the U.S. Army in February 1943, he served primarily in California in the administrative offices, completing his three year term as a Corporal.

He was a 1950 graduate of the McKechnie-Lunger School of Commerce in Rochester which became Rochester Institute of Technology School of Business. He was active with the Alumni Association and at one point was the General Chairman of the Newman Club.

Robert was employed in the administrative offices at the Victory Markets in Norwich, the predecessor to the Great American Food Chain. He was very active with Saint Paul’s Church. Serving as an usher and responsible for the reconciliation of Sunday collections for a period exceeding four decades. He was very active in the community, competing on the City Tennis Team, Bowling Teams and for many years served as the Residential Chairman of the Community Chest of Norwich or what is now the Chenango United Way.

His love for the Catholic Community and the greater Norwich area will continue to be expressed in many significant ways by his creation of the R.C. Smith Charitable Foundation, Inc.
